GET INVOLVED

Volunteer

Are you interested in supporting other practitioners while learning Chan meditation in a retreat setting? Join our team of retreat volunteers and help us create a supportive and mindful environment for everyone.

As a retreat volunteer, you will have the opportunity to serve as a Chan Hall assistant, outside support team member, or kitchen support team member. You will also participate in Chan Hall group practice in the early mornings and evenings, attend Dharma talks, and may have the opportunity to have interviews with the teachers.

In addition to mindful work practice, retreat volunteers are expected to volunteer for the full length of the retreat. This allows for a deeper level of engagement with the retreat experience and the opportunity to form meaningful connections with other practitioners.

To be accepted as a retreat volunteer, we require that you attend at least one of our 2-day retreats before. This allows us to get to know you better and ensures that you are committed to the practice and our community.

Please note that our principle of approving people to the center is based on their sincere interest in the practice, and we will not accept those who are just looking for a place to stay for convenience sake.

If you are interested in applying to be a retreat volunteer, please fill out our volunteer application form and indicate your availability and preferred role. We look forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to our community.

Coming Soon: Residency Program

In the near future, Dharma Drum Retreat Center will be implementing a residency program for dedicated practitioners.

Our residency program provides you a mindfulness environment to practice Chan meditation. You will be able to join the Dharma Talks and do daily meditation with us. Engage in our daily practice based on the Chan monastic routine. Morning sitting starts at 5:15 am followed by morning services. Group meals, mindful work practice, and self study consist a day life.

Please know you might have around 5 hours of work practice per day. While you are living here, you might be assigned tasks such as the following:
  1. Retreat and workshop assistant.
  2. Clean up the environment, including dorms, Chan Hall etc.
  3. Housekeeping work to support retreats.
  4. Daily tasks (such as water testing).
  5. Kitchen assistant.
